Tax Slips

The 2023 Tax Season is here! Encrypted Tax slips have been sent directly to student NU email accounts. If you do not have a SIN, or did not submit your SIN via the NU National Identification Number Request form, you would have been sent a second email from SAC with instructions on how to access your document(s). NOTE: Northeastern staff cannot advise students on tax-related inquiries. Please seek direction regarding tax preparation from a professional tax preparation service provider.

T2202s

Canadian campus students are eligible to receive a T2202 tax slip for all tuition paid. T2202s are completed to reflect full-time and part-time studies and the associated tuition paid for the specified study periods. Tax slips are based on the actual study period and not the time of payment. Tax years are based on calendar years. For example, January 2023 to December 2023 study periods will be reflected in the 2023 tax year, and slips would be issued by the end of February 2024.

Payments made in the fall of 2023 for studies that will take place in 2024 will not be eligible for 2023 tax slips. Only tuition paid for actual study periods that occurred in 2023 will be issued a T2202 in the standard tax season in February 2024. Students who made payments in early 2023 for Rall 2023 studies will be issued a tax slip in 2024 for the Fall 2023 term only. Any studies taken in 2024 will have tax slips issued in the 2025 tax season.

Accounts with outstanding 2023 fees may not receive a T2202 tax slip. If the 2023 fees are fully outstanding, no tax slip will be issued. However, if the 2023 fees have been partially paid, students will receive a T2202 only reflecting amounts that were paid (and not the full tuition amount). It should also be noted that your name will be listed on the tax slip in the LASTNAME, FirstName format.

Students enrolled in solely Online courses are considered to be taking courses from the Boston campus. As such, students with an entirely online course delivery method for all courses in a set term/quarter, are billed via the US campus Student Hub system. As a result, students with solely Online courses will need to request a TL11 (see below). Students with a mixed course delivery method (Traditional, Hybrid, Online, Virtual) will still be issued a T2202.

It should also be noted that all T2202s contain NU’s Boston mailing address, as that is where the main Student Financial Services department is located. This does not affect your actual Canadian campus affiliation.

Students are strongly encouraged to update their addresses to ensure all details are accurately reflected on their tax slips. This includes proper mailing address formats. Errors in address formats can cause delays in processing and potentially hinder tax slip delivery where physical copies are mailed. Students may encounter penalties from the CRA due to incorrect information.

Standard mailing address formats should be as follows:

FirstName LastName

123 Somewhere Street

City, Province Code  POSTAL CODE (Toronto, ON  M1M 1M1)

Students agree to digital delivery of their tax slips when they sign off on their Student Financial Responsibility Agreements (SFRAs) at the start of the study period. As such, tax slips will be password protected and emailed to students’ Northeastern email addresses. Please check your email settings to permit messages from Student Accounts Canada (studentaccounts_canada@northeastern.ca). Also note that the SAC email address is for outbound messaging only. If you have any inquiries, please use the SFS Inquiry form and be sure to include your NUID and topic in the Description Box.

T4As

Students who were NU Scholarship recipients will also be issued a T4A for any scholarship funding that was awarded for study periods in the same calendar year.  Please note that T4As will reflect the scholarship amount for the study period associated to the award, not the date in which students are notified of their eligibility.

Any scholarships issued by external sources will have their own processes for administering their T4A slips. Students should address their inquiries regarding external scholarships directly with the funding source.

TL11s

TL11s are the U.S. equivalent to T2202s. Generally, courses with fully online delivery (ONL) are considered to be Boston campus courses. If you were enrolled in these courses, you would not be eligible for a T2202 but would need to request a TL11 from the SFS Boston team instead.  However, there are some exceptions, such as courses coded as “Virtual” (VTL) course delivery. If you are uncertain about your course, please submit a case via the SFS Inquiry form (see link below).

NOTE: TL11s are not automatically issued and must be requested by submitting an SFS Student Inquiry form request.  Be sure to include your NUID and “Request for TL11 for online courses” in the Description box.
